With the ongoing 2018-19 football season drawing to a close, many European teams have already shifted their attention to the upcoming summer transfer window, in a bid to bolster squads ahead of the next season. Manchester United are no different, with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intending to do all that it takes for them to become real title contenders, both in England and Europe.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian is also aware of the fact that some of his current stars are looking to leave the club, and as a result, United have already started looking at replacements for them.
One of these players is David de Gea, who is yet to sign a contract extension with the Old Trafford outfit – thereby allowing us to assume that he will leave the club soon. And now, Metro reports that Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak could well be his replacement starting this summer.
De Gea, who is one of the finest among Manchester United players at the moment, is involved in a contract standoff with the club, over a wage issue. The Spaniard wanted a new weekly wage of £400,000 as per a new contract, but the club representatives are not ready to repeat the mistake they made in the case of Alexis Sanchez.
The 28-year old shotstopper now has only fufteen more months left in his old contract, and may leave the club soon either on a slashed price, or on a free transfer at the end of these 15 months.
As per Metro, these are the reasons that have forced the Red Devils to renew their interest in Oblak, who meanwhile has been terrific on the field, for Los Rojiblancos. The Slovenian has been a long-term target for the English club, and this new situation regarding de Gea adds to their interest now.
FOX Sports Asia probability ratings: 3/5; De Gea has attracted interest from top clubs like Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain, and if he leaves, United may be forced to look for a worthy successor – and Oblak for sure fits the description.
