According to reports, Atletico Madrid are keen on bringing in PSV’s Hirving Lozano. The Mexican winger has been touted as Luis Suarez’s replacement at Barcelona by no less than Lionel Messi.
Although it comes as a bit of a surprise that Messi would choose Lozano as heir to Suarez, it’s not within our ambit to question Messi’s footballing know-how. Arch-rivals Real Madrid was also briefly interested in the Mexican, however, reports suggest that Zidane pulled the plug on that move.
However, Atletico’s interest in the player marks a shift from their usual policy of bringing in abrasive characters. The emphasis under Simeone has been to rely on friction, a season-long state of being under siege, us against them but cranked up to 11.
Atletico have thus carved out a way of playing in which they embrace suffering. While it has made the Colchoneros one of the most intimidating teams in Europe, the policy of signing blood and thunder players has backfired spectacularly with the second coming of Diego Costa.
According to Don Balon, the plucky outfit are sizing up an offer for intrepid winger Lozano. The Mexican was outstanding in the World Cup, especially against Germany where his speed and skill caused the defending champions numerous headaches.
Atleti could potentially swoop in on the winger affectionately known as ‘Chucky’ for his uncanny resemblance to Child’s Play central character. Although more details are yet to emerge, it is believed that the Mexican would offer an inexpensive solution to their creative woes.
Fox Sports Probability Rating: 2.5/5; While Lozano’s talent is bound to outgrow the Eredivisie, the rumours linking him to Atletico Madrid is fodder for Don Balon. Wait till more credible sources verify/deny this story.
