Ashley Young is the latest addition to a long line of players receiving racist abuse.  The incident is reported to have taken place over Twitter, where the wing back was racially abused after Manchester United’s limp exit from the  Champions League.

This continues a disturbing trend of persistent racist behaviour by supporters or otherwise. To draw on certain instances, Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose were subject to racial slurs from the stands during their recent Euro Cup qualifier against Montenegro. Sterling was also similarly targeted by Chelsea fans during a Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool’s Mo Salah was branded a “bomber” by certain Chelsea fans during the club’s away trip to Slavia Prague.

In Italy, where several instances of racism were reported in the past, Juventus’ young forward Moise Kean was the most recent victim during a game at Cagliari.

In Kean’s case, his captain Leonardo Bonucci was critical of his reactions in a ludicrous turn of events. According to Sky Sports, Arsenal have launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media of one of their supporters directing racist abuse at Napoli defender, Kalidou Koulibaly.

A spurt in racist behaviour has prompted Kick it Out to amp up its campaign. The organisation released a statement in light of the incident involving Ashley Young:

“Yet another black player, this time Ashley Young, targeted with racist abuse on social media after tonight’s Champions League game.”

“Again, we’re left asking Twitter the same question – when will you take serious action to tackle the rampant discrimination on your platform?”
