AFC Champions League 2019: Al Nassr score late winner against Al Zawraa; Zobahan edging towards knockouts

Al Nassr Al Zawraa AFC Champions League

Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr FC recorded a late, late winner against Iraq’s Al Zawraa SC in Group A of the AFC Champions League at the Karbala Sports City on Tuesday.

Hosts Al Zawraa had taken the lead through Alaa Abbas in the first half, but Yahya Al-Shehri equalised for the visitors in the 56th minute before substitute Nawaf Al-Farshan scored the winner for the Saudis in the eighth minute of the second half injury time!

Al Nassr had began the brighter of the two sides in the Group A encounter, but it was the Iraqis who took the lead against the run of play when 21-year-old Iraq international striker Abbas netted at the half-hour mark.

The Saudi Pro League outfit looked to hit back and had to wait until around the hour-mark to level the score when Al-Shehri found the back of the net under controversial circumstances.

Al Nassr striker Abdulla Al Salem and Al Zawraa goalkeeper had rattled against each other after the former had gotten behind the defenders, but Al-Shehri followed up by firing the loose ball into the back of the net.

Though the Al Zawraa defenders complained to the referee that their goalkeeper was rolling on the ground injured when the ball was rolled in, the referee let the goal stand and the match was back level.

And it looked as if the two teams would share the spoils and Al Zawraa would remain in the top half of the group with two matchdays to go, but Al Nassr had other plans.

Al Zawraa had won a free kick with the clock running down, but Al Nassr custodian launched a counter which was finished off by Al-Farshan — Hassan beaten at his near post with barely any time left on the clock!

Zobahan extend lead at the top to four points

IR Iran’s Zobahan FC recorded their third win of the ACL 2019 as they comfortably defeated United Arab Emirates (UAE) side Al Wasl FC 2-0 at the Foolad Shahr Stadium in the other match of Group A.

Alireza Cheraghali gave the hosts a very early lead in the second minute while the game was pretty much wrapped up by the 15th minute when Amir Arsalan Motahari doubled their advantage.

That was how the score remained for the rest of the game with Zobahan putting one foot in the knockout stages of the continental championship after developing a four-goal lead at the top of Group A.

Al Nassr are second in the group with six points while Al Zawraa find themselves third with four points. Al Wasl occupy bottom spot with three points.
